Mustang Island State Park Itinerary

Mustang Island State Park

Morning: Arrival & Beach Walks (8:00–10:00 AM)

Arrive early to take advantage of the cooler temperatures and quieter beaches. After paying the entrance fee (adults are $7 and children 12 and under are free), head straight to the Gulf side of the park and take a peaceful walk along the shoreline. Morning is one of the best times for shell hunting, birdwatching, and photography, as shorebirds are most active and the beach is less crowded. Bring a cup of coffee and listen to the sound of the waves and admire the sun as it rises over the dunes.

Late Morning: Swim, Sun & Sand (10:00 AM–12:30 PM)

As the day warms up, settle in for some beach time. Lay out towels and swim in the Gulf or relax with a book. The wide, natural beaches give you plenty of space to spread out without feeling crowded. There are no lifeguards on duty, so keep an eye on surf conditions and swim with caution. This is also a great time for sandcastle building or a stroll along the shoreline to cool off between dips in the water.

Lunch Break: Picnic with a View (12:30–1:30 PM)

Pack a picnic lunch or grab takeout before entering the park. Use one of the picnic areas or enjoy a casual beachside lunch from your cooler. Be sure to stay hydrated and reapply sunscreen! After lunch, take a short break in the shade to recharge for the afternoon.

Afternoon: Bay-Side Exploration or Paddling (1:30–3:30 PM)

In the afternoon, head to the bay side of the park to experience a different side of Mustang Island. This area is calmer and perfect for kayaking, paddleboarding, or simply exploring the shoreline. The Mustang Island Paddling Trail offers shallow waters and excellent wildlife viewing, including coastal birds and marine life. If you’re not paddling, take a nature walk along the bay and keep an eye out for herons, egrets, and other shorebirds that thrive in this ecosystem.

Evening: Wildlife Watching & Relaxation (3:30–Sunset)

As the sun begins to set, head back to the beach for some birdwatching and beachcombing. During this time, the lighting is ideal for photos as well, so bring your camera and snap away. Before heading out, be sure to pack out everything you brought in and leave the park just as beautiful as you found it.
