Flynn’s Beach Run (October 24, 2026): Flynn’s Beach Run is a run made for everyone. This race gives runners the options of a 5K, 10K, and a family-friendly fun run. You can also participate in the virtual run if you aren’t able to be here in Port Aransas. The race will start at Horace Caldwell Pier at 8 a.m. The 5K and 10K races are divided by gender and age groups, and awards will be given. Registration fees vary depending on the race.

Nature Preserve at Charlie’s Pasture
The Nature Preserve at Charlie’s Pasture is 1,280 acres of upland prairies, tidal flats, and marshlands. The preserve is one of the few remaining tracts of undeveloped land, serving as a sanctuary for over 30 native and migrating species of shorebirds, songbirds, and waterfowl throughout the year. Depending on when you visit, you may come across birds like the Snowy Plover, Wilson’s Plover, Dunlin, and the threatened Reddish Egret. It’s also a wintering site for the globally endangered Whooping Crane species.
The Nature Preserve at Charlie’s Pasture has two entrances: the North entrance (Port Street entrance) and the South entrance (361 entrance).
Along with a pavilion, picnic tables, and restrooms, the North entrance features 3 trails:
Community Park Trail (1 mile), Clay’s Hill Trail (.25 miles with paved trails, viewing scopes, and ADA accessible), and the Salt Island Trail (2.2 miles with a boardwalk that takes you through the tidal salt marsh and leads you to the Salt Island Tower and connects to the Birding Center).
The South entrance includes a parking area and a shaded picnic area. You’ll find one trail here, the South Trail, which is about 1 mile long and switches from boardwalk to a granite trail. You’ll find an observation tower about ¾ of a mile into the trail, which overlooks the Nature Preserve at Charlie’s Pasture.
Weekly/Monthly Activities at the Nature Preserve at Charlie’s Pasture
– Nature Walk @ Salt Island Trail: Held monthly on the first Saturday. Take a FREE guided walk through the marsh, tidal flat, and grassland habitats, see birds, plants, and other critters. The walk begins at 8:00 AM, and registration is required on porta.recdesk.com. Be sure to bring a water bottle to stay hydrated. The meeting point is at the Charlie’s Pasture Pavilion at the end of Port Street.
– Nature Preserve Yoga: A certified yoga instructor will teach adaptable types of Yoga, 12:30 PM each Tuesday at the Port Aransas Nature Preserve at Charlie’s Pasture Pavilion.
Leonabelle Turnbull Birding Center
The Leonabelle Turnbull Birding Center is a birders’ paradise. The center is a part of the Great Texas Coastal Birding Trail, and offers two boardwalks that make up 1,200+ feet, two shaded observation platforms, benches, and two spotting scopes. You’ll walk over the area’s unique freshwater wetlands and get the chance to see spotted spoonbills, ducks, and more. The site is now connected to the Salt Marsh Trail at the Nature Preserve at Charlie’s Pasture, so you can extend your walk if you choose.
Weekly Activities at the Leonabelle Turnbull Birding Center
– Birding on the Boardwalk: Join experts at the Leonabelle Turnbull Birding Center to experience birding from the boardwalk. This walk will be short along our boardwalk, but offers great vistas for watching all our wonderful birds. All experience levels are welcome, and binoculars are available for loan. No registration is required. The program begins at 9 am. Meet at the Leonabelle Turnbull Birding Center picnic table in the front under the big trees.
– Nature Walk @ the Birding Center: Take a free guided walk through the Leonabelle Turnbull Birding Center & Port Aransas Nature Preserve at Charlie’s Pasture along the South Trail. Walk along the boardwalk and through the marsh, tidal flat, and grassland habitats, and see birds, plants, and other critters. Registration required. Third Saturdays through November.
Joan and Scott Holt Paradise Pond
The Joan and Scott Holt Paradise Pond is located behind Restaurant San Juan. The 2-acre freshwater pond is home to several neotropical migratory birds during the spring and fall migratory season, so that is considered the best time to birdwatch. The boardwalk takes you through a pollinator garden and is now connected to the Community Park through a ¼ mile trail.
Wetland Park
Wetland Park offers a nice respite from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Here, you’ll find a boardwalk that leads to a gazebo that overlooks the tidal flats. Come during the wet periods or when the tide is high to see visitors like shorebirds, waterfowl, and wading birds. Keep note of the birds you’ve seen and then write down the species on the chalkboard at the entrance of the birding area!

Where to Find Shells in Port Aransas
- San José Island (St. Jo Island): This uninhabited island, just a short ferry ride across the channel, is a beachcomber’s paradise. With 21 miles to explore, you’re likely to find Lightning Whelk, sand dollars, and so much more.
- Mustang Island State Park: You could spend hours hunting for shells at Mustang Island State Park. Keep your eyes peeled for coquinas, shark eyes, and whelks while walking.
- I.B. Magee Beach State Park: Located under the Horace Caldwell Pier, the area around the pier and jetties is great for shelling.
When is the Best Time to Find Shells
The best time for beachcombing is low tide, right after a full moon or a storm, when more sand is exposed. Early mornings are also a great time to find shells, and you’ll get first pick! Try beachcombing one or two days before a storm or high winds if you can. The turbulence of a storm churns up the sand on the ocean floor and deposits the shells on the beach.
Types of Shells You Can Find in Port Aransas
Lightning Whelk: The Lightning Whelk is Texas’ official state shell, which makes spotting them all the more exciting. Unlike most shells, the lightning whelk opens on the left side of the shell. Live lightning whelks live in bay waters and mainly feed on clams, oysters, and scallops.
Angel Wings: These beautifully delicate, chalky white shells mimic the wings of an angel (hence its name). Finding half of a wing is fairly common, but the real prize is finding these feather-like shells with both valves intact. True angel wings live up to 3 feet in sand, clay, and mud of the bays.
Shark Eyes: These swirly, round brown shells are a fairly common shell to come across in Port Aransas. They are a type of moon snail and are carnivorous eaters who hunt for other clams in the surf!
Moon Snails: Another highly sought-after shell for beachcombers in Port Aransas, moon snails are defined by their smooth and glossy appearance and their swirl. They’re often referred to as “Necklace” shells because the snails drill holes into the shells themselves!
Other common sea creatures you’ll come across on your shelling adventures include sand dollars, starfish, and shark teeth!
Shelling Etiquette
We always want to be respectful and responsible when it comes to beachcombing. While it’s a fun, free, family-friendly activity, there are a few things to keep in mind:
- Make sure there are no live animals in the shells you are collecting. If you come across a shell with a living creature, you can admire it, but please leave it where you found it.
- While building your seashell collection can be fun, limit how many shells you take so that marine life like hermit crabs can use the empty shells as homes.
- If you dig any holes to look for shells, make sure to fill them back up.

History of San José Island
San José Island’s history dates back to 1845, when Lt. Chandler of the USS Alabama planted the first American flag to fly over Texas territory on a sand dune. Aransas, a small military town, was established. However, during the Civil War, the Union Army destroyed and burned the town, leaving nothing remaining. The island was turned into a fishing and hunting resort, and today, it is privately owned and operates as a wildlife conservation ranch.
Sandpiper Tip: While the island is private, people are welcome to visit as long as you stay on the beach below the mean high tide line.
How to Get to San José Island
Traveling to St. Jo is as easy as hopping onto the Jetty Boat for a short ride across the channel. The Jetty Boat runs every day from Fisherman’s Wharf to the North Jetty on San Jose Island. Departure times vary by season. In the summer, trips start as early as 6:30 am, with the last departure trip at 4:00 pm. Return trips are fewer, with return trips to Fisherman’s Wharf starting at 10:10 am and the last return trip at 6:00 pm.
Rates for the Jetty Boat round trip are below:
- $20.00 for anyone 13 or older
- $10.00 for ages 6-12
- Ages 5 and under are free.
Sandpiper Tip: Arrive at the dock well in advance of the departure times to ensure you don’t miss the boat. The 6:00 pm trip from San Jose Island back to Fisherman’s Wharf is the LAST return trip of the day, and you don’t want to be stranded on the island overnight.
What to Bring on Your Day Trip
There are no amenities or shelters of any kind on the island, so you’ll want to make sure you’re well prepared for the day if you choose to spend a few hours or the day on St. Jo. Here’s what we recommend packing for a day on the island:
- Sun protection – You’ll want to pack sunscreen (a lot!), hats, and sunglasses.
- Water – Staying hydrated is important, especially on warmer days. Bring extra, even if you only plan to stay for a couple of hours.
- Cooler – Pack a cooler with snacks and drinks. The island is perfect for a nice picnic with family!
- Gear – If you plan to fish, beachcomb, or bird watch, be sure to bring your gear!

World-Class Fishing: The North Jetty is a legendary spot for anglers. You can cast for Speckled Trout, Redfish, Flounder, and Tarpon.
