This year’s Deep Sea Round Up Fishing Tournament of Port Aransas celebrated its’ 80th annual tournament this year! This tournament started in 1939 and has been going strong since. Other than the off shore tournament, the other divisions are bay fishing, fly fishing, bay surf fishing and even a Piggie Perch contest for the little ones.
This has been going on for years at Port Aransas and is a great thing to come and join in on the fun, no matter what age! You can see some really awesome fish coming in from weigh in and then listen live music at the Robert’s Point Pavilion overlooking the Corpus Christi Ship Channel.
Master Captain David Heasley and his mates on their 38 foot Cabo Express competed in this years competition, running 17 hour days on rough seas. They pulled in White Marlin and Dorado, bringing in the 2nd place Dorado. “There were two White Marlin hooked at the same time but the HUGE one got away.”-says Heasley. With only a few hours left before weigh in, Dan Whiteside lands the Dorado and Cap’t Dave scooted back with the throttle wide open to make it in time for weigh in.
